Choi Kwang Do was founded by Kwang Jo Choi on March 2, 1987. Kwang Jo Choi was born in South Korea before emigrating to Canada in the early 1970s. Choi was a successful ITF Tae Kwon Do practitioner and trainer (serving as a chief instructor) before establishing his own style.
While teaching and demonstrating ITF Tae Kwon Do in South East Asia, Kwang Jo Choi became injured through his training and demonstrations to the point where he was unable to continue with the discipline. Determining that the injuries were caused by the way he was performing martial arts, Choi undertook rehabilitative exercises, attended various seminars and studied techniques for rehabilitation. Choi incorporated these techniques into his own fighting style, and from that he developed Choi Kwang Do.

Horsham CKD chief instructor Stuart Clarkson was kind enough to let me in to his school to take some photographs of Choi Kwang Do in action. All the members of the club were very welcoming and enthusiastic about the art they practise and I was impressed by their fitness, flexibility and technique.
The images here are selection from those that were taken on the night and I think they give an illustration of the type of martial art Choi Kwang Do is, you can see the influence of Taekwondo in the kicks, the punches are delivered in a way that is less impactful on the joints than karate or western boxing but do not lack in power because of that.
