Assignment 5 of my HNC was an interesting one, we had to create a cover image for an album cover. Although I had already worked with musicians I wasn’t allowed to re-use old material so decided to create an artist persona to use instead. The first person I thought of for the artist was my friend, the very talented, actor, writer and director Dusan Mrden. I created a specific biography for him, which you can read below, and a design brief for the album cover. I passed the assignment but got caught out by some peculiarities with the way I did my referencing for the images I used as reference material. Having been out of education for a long time I am finding the writing of assignments the hardest part, also not really feeling like am learning at the moment, which is making harder to motivate myself to do the next assignment.. Need to push on.
Artist Biography
Born Dusan Mrden, in post-communist Serbia, Dusan Dark is the bad boy of European free-form jazz. Dark discovered free-form Jazz in the underground clubs of his home town of Belgrade. Already a musical prodigy he quickly became obsessed with mastering the clarinet and saxophone and led a number of bands over a frenetic 9- month period. Before long he grew frustrated at the lack of musical peers in his home country and moved to Paris to mingle with like-minded musical mavericks in the vibrant, seedy jazz clubs of the Latin Quarter. It was at this time he adopted the name Dusan Dark, as a reference to the demons that have haunted many of the great musicians of the golden era of Jazz. He has the reputation of being fiercely committed to his art and is a keen student of the history of Jazz. He cites Miles Davis and John Coltrane as his heroes and has expressed an interest in replicating the look and feel of some of Davis’s iconic album covers and artists from the same era (Thelonius Monk as an example).
